Unlike the avant garde artists of his era, Tschichold was typograpny traditionally trained calligrapher and typographer and had formally studied book design at the Leipzig Academy.

Celeste is a very static typeface, like a sort of updated Walbaum, light and a bit square — pretty but not dynamic. His circumstances as a young typographical radical in s Germany also led him from an exhilarating artistic milieu to persecution and arrest in the early days of the Nazis, and eventually to exile in conservative Switzerland.

By the later ‘s avant garde typography was making inroads into more mainstream commercial design much through the efforts of designer Jan Tschichold. His seeming rejection of the ideas put forward in this present book caused ttypography turbulence among designers that has yet to settle. By the late ‘s he has lost touch with the Circle and the new typography ceased.
