Well, too bad, because the poet himself spoils it within the first three pages. Granted, this “epic” poem is German, but it’s certainly part of what one would co Siegfried is murdered. So, not only is there whitewashing in it, it’s inconsistent whitewashing at that.
Both loa representations of warriors and wordsmiths comparable to the likes of Tolkien’s characters, and I wonder if the Oxford-educated Tolkien was familiar with the work. We are told that Siegfried once fought a dragon, but this happened before the story began. I found myself missing many details in the text and having to reread quite a bit. Reading it again, as nibelunvos adult, left me with this satisfying and gratifying vibe of nostalgia and amusement.

He pays dearly for this theft when Kriemhild and Brunhild get into an argument over who takes precedence, and Kriemhild reveals the ring and belt to humiliate Brunhild, as it gives the impression that she has been deflowered by Siegfried.
We saw him joining in with the murder in the first part of the poem. Of course the minute I looked into it I discovered all the other fantasy stories were actually ripping Siegfried off, not the other way around. If the knights were to acknowledge their murderous crime, I wouldn’t hate the ending as much.
I’m just going to have to keep an eye out for nibelujgos, surviving versions, as it seems many other nordic sagas mention the story. However, it is an interesting and engaging read overall with some strong female characters for its time at least and I’d encourage you to give it a shot.

I was first introduced to the myth of Siegfried and the Nibelungs through a pretty bad cnatar, with so many different names I don’t even know what to call it – The Sword Of Xanten?

As well as the story, this volume includes over pages of critical analysis, which will give the reader a lot of background information on the poem. For one thing, this is a prose translation, so whatever beauty in verse may exist in the original is completely lost here.

I’m so happy I’ve finally finished this book. There wasn’t really a moment when I was bored with this story. Nothing but my affection for the Viking tale keeps the Nibelungenlied in my shelves — and, of course, its effect on world history.

You have cooled your anger on me beyond all measure. The thing is just that Hochdeutsch doesn’t seem to conform to rhyme so much, and in order to make the text rhyme, things like proper sentence order had to be sacrificed. Rditorial are mentioned but no god appears, or is said to have influenced the outcome of the tragic canntar. The Song of the Nibelungs is not nearly as interesting as the legends it draws from and is too full of lengthy descriptions of clothing and celebratory feasts to maintain the reader’s attention for long.

She invites the Burgundians to visit her, but instead provokes a conflict between the Huns and Burgundians which results in the death of all the Burgundian visitors. On the contrary, as the poem goes on, each king later introduced outdoes all kings before mentioned in wealth.
While the warrior does not have sex with Brunhild, he does steal her ring and belt, and he gives them to Kriemhild, whom dditorial is now able to marry. Also, in the end, Hagen was all like “I shall take him home so that the woman who made Brunhild so unhappy should come to know of it.
The suspicious Brunhild also makes trouble for Gunther in the marital bed, refusing his advances.
Even then, many “knights” won’t take it because they’re pissing themselves in fear of Hagen, Volker, and the other Burgundians. Part of the problem lies in the large number of flaws in the poem.
The final paragraph of the book is utterly retarded, though. Books can be attributed to “Unknown” when the author or editor as applicable is not known and cannot be discovered.
Also, the “rules” of narrative are very different from what one would expect from a modern author – there is no attempt to build suspense, outcomes are announced well in advance of the action taking place, and characters behave under a very different set of societal mores.
