The beach of Tulum with the ancient mayan buildings and I remember a fan leaves palm growing there! The leaves, on a cm long and 0,1 cm broad petiole, are palmate, orbicular, of cm of diameter, dark green above, silver grey below, deeply incised in linear-triangular segments with acuminate bifid apex, cm long at the centre and merged at the base for a length of cm.
Other species growing in these dunes are Thrinax radiata, Chrysobalanus icaco, Metopium brownei, Coccoloba uvifera, Cordia sp. Thank you so much Jim, great to have you aboard, Ed.

The inflorescences coccothrianx very short and the branches are not well developed. The literature says that the Thatch Palm’s hastula is triangular but the Mexican Silver Palm’s can be triangular, notched at the tip, or have two distinct tips.
It bears the salty winds, hence it can be utilized in gardens close to the sea. These forests grow in the middle region of Quintana Roo environs of Tulum near the coast where the humidity is also high but soils are poorer and very rocky, with coralline limestone outcrops.

The spear-like items pointing at the sky are old fruiting heads of Caribbean Coccothrinqx, Agave angustifolia. It is generally smaller, but trunks are wider and grayish, the hastula is deeply bifid, the inflorescences are shorter and frequently the terminal primary branches are not well developed.
Then there was the matter of the “hastula,” which is a triangular, toothlike appendage on the upper surface of some fan palms fronds, where the blade attaches to the petiole. In that picture the taller, darker palms in the background are the Buccaneer Palms we profiled last week.
